None. Gen. Douglas McArthur called Eisenhower "the best clerk in the Army." But I'd say he did a good job.

Dwight Eisenhower had just a LITTLE battlefield experience. He commanded the Allied forces landing in North Africa in November 1942; on D-Day, 1944, he was Supreme Commander of the troops that invaded France. He began his military career in 1911, when he enrolled in West Point, the U.S. Military Academy.

His experience was in training and planning. Coordination of allied efforts in europe required someone with planning experience. His abilities were noticed and championed by his superiors, as was common to all other major officers: General Fox Connor, General Douglas McArthur and Army Chief of Staff General George Marshall. That was a pretty good reference list.

Until his appointment as Commanding General, European Theater of Operations in 1942, he had never held a combat command. Technically, you could say that he never led troops in combat...he was more an administrator, which was the reason he was selected as Supreme Commander, Allied Expeditionary Forces.
