By most accounts Krypton, I do not know if the Fictional Planet was named for the element or vise versa, as I havent looked at a science book in ages.
In 1986 when they reset the time line it was said that he landed in a 'birthing matrix' meaning that he was technically a Fetus when he was launched from Krypton(one assumes they had that tech.) and wasn't technically born until the Kents touched the craft and the shell withered away revealing baby Kal-El to be inside. Thus making him born on earth.( read somewhere there was an arc w/ Superman running for President of USA)
Since then in most every version, his origins have gone back to born on Krypton and launched here.I think in 2004 with 'Birthright' it has been shifted back to that as well in the comics.

Krypton! Debris from his home planet (called kryptonite) makes Superman weak. Depending on the colour of the meteor rock, different things happen to him.
Green kryptonite makes him extremely weak and unable to use his powers
Red kryptonite makes him into a bad boy who doesnt think about his actions
Silver kryptonite makes him paranoid
And others, but I don't remember right now.
