Power, control, money

Mostly though to keep the uneducated southerners in check and them voting for him and his party.

"Why of course the people don't want war ... But after all it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship ...Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger."

--Hermann Goering, Nazi leader, at the Nuremberg Trials after World War II

Against my own better judgment, I am going to respond to your question.

The term Mission Accomplished meant, in my view, that the toppling of Saddam and his Republican Guard was finished and the major formal battle was over. The next logical phase of the operation was the formation of the new Democratic Iraqi government. Mistakes were made. Locking down the borders should have been a higher priority. We have to shift our strategies when the conditions of a situation change. The military leadership did not do it's best work here, no doubt. Many of the insurgents are from neighboring countries and had we been a little faster on our feet, we should have seen this threat on the horizon. So now, our task is to make the changes necessary and keep an eye on the causes of the turmoil and apply what we have learned from our errors.

Lie? I think you missed the big deception here Sean. I don't think for one minute that we went into Iraq for the sole purpose of removing Saddam. My firm belief is that we went into Iraq to show Iran that they will not be allowed to fulfill their nuclear prophecy regarding the total removal of Israel and the bringing forth of the hidden Imam. But that's just my view. Been wrong before man. :)

Because he can!!!!!!!!! If citizens do not read the paper, read the news on the net, check out political sites, keep up with the war in Iraq and other countries, then what he says on the T.V. sounds good to them....Some people can't handle the truth....they want to hear everything is okay so they can fell safe and fuzzy at night. Me; I'm appalled at his behavior, all the way back to the first election, which by the way Al Gore did win, after all the voting in Florida was straightened out......He got a second term because people simply won't go out and vote because they don't think their vote counts....Well EVERY VOTE COUNTS.....You take a million people who don't think their vote counts, and their you go, you get Bush in the office for another four years...............I am glad to see these types of questions. It shows me their are some insightful people who care about America and American people......Our presence in Iraq was brought on by his insistance that Saddam had nuclear weapons, well he didn't. Hell if we can try to impeach a President for lying about sex, why did we not try to impeach Bush for lying about Iraq, hell look at all the deaths and the money we are spending on that war................I'm at a loss with him...He is arrogant beyond belief.............I hope everyone on yahoo will vote in 2008. I hope they start now looking up the people that plan to run, their policies, their voting records, their personal lives.......If everyone that could, would vote, this will be a different country...Everyone has seemed to forgot that they are a government of the people, not a government of the budget........We need to hold our politicians accountable, all of them, starting with our city counsels, then the mayors, then the congressmen and senators, all the way to the presidency. But the only way to do this is to stay informed about what they are doing, and not just what involves only you.....We are a self centered people.......If it doesn't personally affect us we don't care...Well that is simply Bull---t. It is time we start appreciating our rights and our constitution. Too many take for granite what we have......We used to be the richest country in the world, now it is China and Japan......In 50 years will they be making policies for us? If each of us does not share our voice it will come to pass...........Sorry for my tyrate, this is just a subject close to me................And don't get me started on the enviroment, which too many politicians are ignoring...........

Because we let him get away with murder. Twice. The 2000 election was a draw that Bush fought to the death helped by all of Daddy's friends (not that we would've been any better off if Al Gore won but still) and in 2004, (when he REALLY stabbed democracy by counting absentee ballots from the military who didn't even know voted) Senator John Kerry, so if my math is right, is more like 7 years and counting.

Surely Bush would not lie, since he was such a great Vietnam vet. He won the war in Iraq 3.5 years ago but we have many more killed and several thousand more wounded, some will live without faces scarred so bad their mothers get sick looking at them. & some will never walk again, he may have even cut down his good pappy's cherry tree and surely would not lie to dear old. dad, but you know, he might have told a few whopper's

Where do I begin?

"combat operations" means open war. I believe he also mentioned how we weren't done in Iraq in that speech.

"US is not winning the war in Iraq" -- Robert Gates.....<--- this is not a quote from Gates and by misquoting him to fit your agenda I call you a liar.

On a second note, this personally offends me as I know Robert Gates to be a good man and I support his competence and ability to lead. The way the media and people like you are spinning his words disgusts me.

Freedom of speech shouldn't be freedom to lie.

Wow, it is amazing how many people blindly support this war. All the evidence available to show it was the wrong war and that lies were told to even get us into the war. Maybe the biggest question is why do all these people blindly believe and follow this guy? It seems there are people on here that think war is good no matter what the reason for the war, as long as there are people out there getting killed. and they also seem to believe that peace is evil. WEIRD.......

Because at that time we had captured Saddam. Review history before you ask another stupid question. And the second "point" is just an opinion, not a qualitative fact.
