I'm not sure. But, I don't think it's just the 'American dilemna'- it's everywhere. My first language teacher here (in Eastern Eur) told me in complete sincerity "It is an absolute waste of time and money to educate black people"... she is a college professor, highly educated. People have always had a hard time understanding what is not their own experience, their own point of view- period. It just goes with being a human being, I think. We just have to keep trying... and trying... and trying....

The them and us culture of America; it's the feeling of instability the media likes to keep the people under. God knows why but they do.
United people are dangerous to those in power. That's my hypothesis anyway.
I don't believe Americans are inheritantly racist, it is a problem that comes from a belief told to them, day in day out but the media, that 'they' hate 'us', so vice versa. But take London for example, thhe most multicultural city in the world, been bombed by a variety of groups and nations over the years but has less racism than other places. I believe this is because of how the media talks about different cultures and races.

Well, our country acquired land by the genocide of one race--Native Americans--and built a strong economy with the slavery of another race---African-Americans.
America also banned many freedoms of non-white immigrants that they feared--Chinese, then threw others in prison camps because others in their race were at war with us--Japanese.
Currently, some powerful people of one race--Middle Eastern--are causing us to fear and abuse all of them.
So, the point is, America's history is rife with mistreatment of people based on race, and because America is such a young, powerful country, it is magnified. (Magnified not in the sense that these problems were blown out of proportion, but magnified because EVERYONE is watching us and our social relations are still unsettled.) Because, keep in mind, racism and genocide are not characteristic of just American History--but also German, Russian, English, Chinese, Dutch, and I'm sure others that I can't think of off-hand.

I think race is an issue just about everywhere. The only way to stop it is to start with our young people. Tolerance is something people need to have more of - and that applies to everything!

because whites constantly use it as an excuse. Want to know why Americana aren't prospering blame the mexicans. Want to discuss why you can't get a job in blame it on the blacks and affirmative action. Want to know why you can't get into a decent university blame it on the Asians.
