I remember a movie from the early 80's about these aliens that were attacking earth. They were hiding under water in the ocean. They had ships that flew out of the water. They also abducted people It was not a big budget movie for sure!!

A. Most audiences can identify with civilians trying to survive more than military types. B. Usually the aliens are FAR more powerful than the humans (thus the war itself is pretty brief and definitely one sided) and the actual war is usually relatively short with the rest of the film being about the aliens hunting down the survivors. This makes the aliens a more imposing menace. C. Realism and Sci-fi movies don't always mix very well. A Sci-fi movie that's too realistic can end up being laughably cheesy or boring. Most people want over-the-top characters in over-the-top situations. Not realistic alien vs. human wars.
