Because usually it's not their own money their spending on the campaign. But sometimes it is, because they have the money and value the prestige and power of being elected to gov't, higher than the money.
As for voting for the lesser of two evils, stop it! There is no satisfaction to be gained from that. If you don't mind doing the research, just look into all the candidates. Usually when I vote, there's maybe about 1/3rd GOP and 2/3rds Libertarian candidates that I vote for, with an occassional other candidate.
I vote for the candidates that most represent my beliefs, whatever party they may belong to. I always feel good about my votes after.

You should not only vote, but get involved in your local politics as well. Americans take the title Citizen for granted, but Democracy is fragile and the wonderful experiment in representative government requires the full participation of as many citizens as possible in order to be successful.
If you don't like the candidates - go out find, recruit and work to have someone you do like elected. If you don't know the issues - reasearch them.
It takes time to live in a democracy - if you don't want to vote, move to a more restricted country and let the dictator tell you what to do.
And just so you know - there is no elected official in this country who earns $800,000 a year (unless you count perks like free rent and utilities in the White House, free flights on Air Force One anywhere you want to go in the world and free car w/driver). What's more, many congress members live in small apartments in D.C. - often sharing with other members.
You should think about running for office! We really need good thoughtful people like you.

I think we still need to vote, but I agree with you about the "lesser of two evils". I'm sick of all the opponent bashing going on during elections. It would be really nice to just hear them address the issues.

to answer this question, let's look at the three stooges.
moe would hold up his hand and ask curly to pick 2. curly would then pick two fingers and then moe would poke curly in the eyes with those two fingers. this is what happens when you play into a corrupt system, you always get hurt no matter what you pick.
but curly had another option. if he didn't pick any fingers he would not be poked in the eyes.
my advice to you is find a 3rd party that you agree with and vote for them. to me, voting for a 3rd party is not wasting your vote, because you will be voting with your values and your vote will have integrity.

Vote! But, go a step further and Vote SMART! Be aware of the issues and the candidates. Communicate with your elected representatives regularly. Be involved and encourage others to be involved.

we must demand that a new voting system in which we write down, on paper!, who our first, second, third choice would be so that way 49% of the country doesn't go unrepresented and we won't have to feel like we need to be committed to one party and all their beliefs.

most of them are filth rich anyway. they arent doing it for the money, they are doing it for power, fame, and to hopefully get perks from lobbyists. Believe it or not, some politicians actually like being a public servant.
