get friends. it'll go way faster. always have at least one person on top and not digging so if it does cave in, they can go for help. and uh... everyone have a digging partner.. ^_^
depending on how firm the ground is where you're digging (and check to make sure it'l legal to dig there) you may need to build wooden supports as you go. if you've seen pictures of mines and stuff, it's how they do it
yea.... look for mines pikkies! it'll be good
hope i helped a bit. and good luck!

Weeeeeeeell......you've left a lot of variables out, (10 ft. deep? 10 ft. long? where you live?) but anyway....

The fastest way would be to hire a local contractor with some mechanized equipment, most effectively, a simple backhoe with a 1/2 cubic yard bucket. You won't be able to do ANYTHING cheap and easy with what you really want, and anything else is a DEATH TRAP for the little boy. (see articles of boy digging in sand on the beach this summer)

Start by calling the utility company (typically Miss Utility). Don't do anything until they mark your yard!!!!!!!!

After that, lay out the perimeter and direction of the tunnel with inverted spray paint on the ground so the backhoe can follow it and start digging. When you get about 5' down, you'll want to start shoring up the sides with plywood and 2x4's so it doesn't collapse on you (safety first). Legally, you really need to trench by stepping back the sides, i.e. digging into the sides to slope them.

For your tunnel you will need a tall enough ladder that will extend 3' past the top of the ground, so you can get out, and some corrugated drainage pipe to stick out of the ground for ventilation. Cover these with a "witch hat" to keep the rain out.

I also reccomend a layer of gravel, plastic sheeting and pouring some concrete at the bottom of your tunnel. Before doing this though, you need to build your tunnel roof with 3/4" plywood at an angle to keep it from collapsing on top of you. Use a plastic waterproofing liner to keep your tunnel from flooding.

IN NO WAY should you try to do all of this on your own, since you'll probably KILL YOURSELF. Consult a general contractor in your area for help. This is probably a $3k - $6k project done cheaply and over $10k done right, depending how big you make it, and could take upwards of a week.

Use a #10 pointed spade. You can reinforce the tunnel with industrial steel tubing.

What are you digging? a grave?...nevermind, I'd use some wood structure or some like that to keep the dirt in place, like a mine.

You can rent an angle driller. Hertz equipment rental, and places like that would probably have one. Just call and explain what it is you want to do, and they should be able to fix you right up.
