My 1992 Corolla won't start after buying a new battery only a week ago. I just get a faint electrical humming sound when I turn the ignition. This was the reason I bought the new battery, but then it happened again the day after I installed it. As with the old battery, I was able to jump-start the car, which makes me think the battery wasn't even the problem. The antifreeze was almost gone so I thought that might have been a problem since it's like -17°C today. I filled up with antifreeze and it ran okay for a few days, then I started having trouble starting. I would get the humming sound as soon as I turned the ignition, but after a second or two it would fire and start up fine. Now today, it doesn't start no matter how long I hold in the ignition, I just get the humming sound. What is the problem, and can I fix it easily? If it's a problem with the starter, why would jump-starting it work? I'm looking for a new car right now, and don't want to invest much into this vehicle.

Thanks!

Either the cables were not properly installed on the power posts, or the starter (or starter solenoid) went bad on you

it sound like you have bad battery cable connections or bad ignition switch. try this method, turn the headlight on and have someone keep an eye on the light. when you turn the key on all the way,the headlight should dim meaning it have power to the starter.if the headlight did not change, you have no power coming to the starter.check for bad wire connection at the battery or you have a bad ignition switch. if you r poor, take a 5 feet electrical wire.connect one end to the back of the starter wire(skinny black wire).take the other end and touch the positive terminal.before dooing this, make sure your car is in park with the parking brake on and the key is on.once you touch the positive cable, the starter will engage.once the engine run, disconnect the wire that you touch the positive terminal.

i think it actually is the starter. when you turn the key a gear will push forward from the starter and engage with the flywheel which turns the motor. i think that the starter only works every so often. ive had the problem before

from previous experience I think it could be either the starter or check the alternator that ususually is an evil thing that can drain batteries when it wants if not correctly working.
hope it works out best of luck and Happy Holidays

before you replace the starter clean both ends of both cables so everything is shiny, then heat that poor thing up , have you ever tried to pour 5w30 oil in that temp ? good luck
