because American soceity now wants to call everyone a hero, even if they screwed up or put themselves in danger. We called George Bush Sr a hero and he crashed into the ocean and was rescued. He didn't do anything heroic. Its our feelgood, "everyone wins" society. That demeans the feats of people who truly are heros. Not everyone who gets killed is a hero. Even that football player who died in Afghanistan, everyone lauded him as a hero, and it turned out he got shot by his own troops and wasn't doing anything heroic, and the Army covered it all up because they wanted the hero PR

Whether you call him a Hero or not, you DO have to give him credit for putting it all on the line to save his family.
I have spent a lot of time in the wood in norther California and Oregon during the winter. At times it snows so bad that you can not tell these narrow dirt roads from the surroundings. With a foot of snow overnight this sounds like one of those times. It is REALLY easy to get lost there. (A good arguement for a gps unit and spare batteries... most people that live in those areas have at least one)
While its true that the all would have survived if they had stayed together, and that is the recommended course of action in cases like this, hindsight is seldom wrong. But they made a decision based on DAYS of being lost. Wrong choice and he paid the cost of that decision. Give him the credit due for trying....and the respect it deserves.

I asked a similar question prior to his body discovery yesterday. "Why was there so much news surrounding this lost guy when there are probably hundreds of missing people everyday?". A colleague then told me that's because he was a CNET senior editor. So would it have generated as much media attention if he was just a janitor?
They probably made some bad decisions to end up in such a bad state. They should've done more research prior to their trip. But people do make mistakes - didn't you ever make a wrong turn?
To the general public, he is probably not a hero. But he is definitely a true hero for going out in a last attempt to save his family.

His decision to drive in winter was not very brilliant. His choice to leave his family was not made immediately. Several days had already passed.
Did you not hear that his tracks in the snow helped guide rescuers to the family?
His mission was to save his family, at risk of his own life, although he was not prepared for the weather.
That was honorable, would you not agree?
As for circles, his mental faculties were impaired by the cold. This should be a lesson worth noting, for everyone.

Yes, he made a mistake by taking the road that led to their problem. Walking in a circle is a very common occurrence when a person is lost.
He was at least trying to do something to save his family, and in fact he did do something.
When he walked he left tracks that led the Helo to his family.

Why so harsh? He's likely being considered a hero due to the fact that he set out to find help for his family. These people weren't from there, probably really didn't know what to expect or what they were getting themselves into. And I'd imagine it really ain't all that hard to go around in circles when everything around you is white and your cold and hypothermia is setting in. Pick on those that can defend themselves, not the dead.

you ignorant jerk. He was trying to save his wife and children. He IS a hero because he led a rescue team to save them.
God you are such an idiot.
