the principle behind a man hole is similar to that used by a hole made by a rat in the wall....what do you say..hey there is a rat hole or if you look into a tree and see a hole you say "hey there is a woodpecker hole".....they are used by rats and woodpeckers respectively thus a man hole is used by a man ( general) the reason for the usage of the holes varies for each animal/individual
while i am here also in my country Belize we have a square hole in the sealing that is called a man hole as well...to go up into the attic and hide/repairs/store stuff

The hole is a "man hole" because a man (person) can climb down this hole to do work in the sewer, if necessary. The cover is a "man hole cover."
