Newly restored Dell workstation with Win XP Home Edition can't see other computers on the peer-to-peer network. This includes shared folders.

The other 2 computers (one XP Home and one XP Pro) can see everything (including this one). I can only map the shared folder using the IP address and I can ping other computers on the network by IP only.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

All 3 group names match (although the other 2 computers could see all 3 workgroups when they were different). None of the computers require a login.

Thanks for offering some suggestions though!

Thanks for the suggestion about manually entering the drive. I already tried this and it didn't work.

The problem seems to be with name resolution within the network (subnet). DNS is fine but I can't refer to other computer on the network by name -- I have to manually type in their IP address.

This would be fine and dandy (although strange), but I'm attempting to sync with an Act! 2007 Server which (apparently) requires name resolution.

Well, it appears that Norton Firewall was the culprit. I didn't realize that the default image of this machine used it but it did. Shutting it off fixed all the problems.

Thanks to everyone who answered.

windows xp home with service pack 2? if yes then problem is no other but windows's own firewall.
try to
1

switch off fire wall, then (better) restart the pc it would be able to access other computers now, and others would be able to access to this one.

2

if other pc's need a username password to access this pc better activate Guest account and then simply give it any password n u r ready to go.

I am assuming that you have the same workgroup name for all of the computers on the network. Start>Settings>Control Panel >System > computer name If not adjust them to same workgroup name.

Another issue that may be causing problems.. Windows will some time limit network access to computers that do not have a secure user id/password logon. If you have a newly restored dell it is probably set up to boot right to windows without a user name/password logon.

Home is bad about this....you have to map the drives manually

"any folder" > tools > map network drive (the rest is pretty self explanitory)

Let me know if that works, your problem sounds more unique, so if that doesnt, we can use some degree of process of elimination
