Imperialism started with England, before there was a Britain, setting up colonies in North America. The Scots lost a great deal of money in trying to set up their own colony which was totally unsuccessful. That was one of the reasons Scotland and England united in 1707 to form Great Britain. The, later in the 18th century the North American colonies were lost (apart from Canada, of course) and the British began to look East. They already had a small interest in India and during the early 19th century that grew until Queen Victoria was pronounced Empress of India. The Brits also began to settle Australia, at first using it as a penal colony, and then New Zealand. During the 2nd half of the 19th century there was a general rush for lands in Africa and Great Britain annexed many areas. The older, white colonies were given Independence, initially as Dominions. India gained its independence in 1947, and the African countries in the late 1950s/early 1960s (not quite a century ago as one answer suggests!)

I do not believe the way I do because I fear eternal damnation. I've had too many memories of other lives, and a couple of NDEs -- so I know what happens next. Look up kundalini. You'll find it googling around. A lot of good information, and my initiation was not on any drug -- but it was at the time my mind was ready to accept more. A biologist and I had nearly the same experience, we met on line and discussed the similarlities. He said that he though a new part of the brain opened up, and I think so as well. It allows for much deeper thought! I do not put God in a man made box so that I can understand with our man made vocabularly that which is incomprehensible. To love so deeply that you would give up your only son, knowing the path he would walk. As a parent, I doubt any of us could! That is LOVE, not damnation. Open your heart, Don. Ask Jesus to forgive you, to live in you, and accept the gift of the Holy Spirit. Find a church that teaches from the Bible. You will find joy.

Their colonies are a good example of their imperialistic power. Of course, the American colonies were one, but they rebelled earlier than any of the others. They also colonized much of Africa; that control ended less than a century ago, I think.

Check Wikipedia for specifics.
