When you call most companies you have to dial an 0784/0870 type number. Can anyone tell me the website where there's a list of freefone numbers I can call for companies like TV Licensing, banks, etc.

Go to Moneysavingexpert.com. Martin Lewis runs the site, he is a sort of consumers champion. (Spends a lot of Friday lunch times on Radio 2. Talks fast, talks sense.)
Type 'Freephone numbers' into his search engine at the top and follow the instructions. That will give you 0800's. Also on your bills you will see call numbers 0044, these are for calls from outside the UK to the utility company etc. Most of these can be obtained free by dropping the 0044.

All freephone/0845/0870 numbers are routed to a 'normal' 01/02 number, which in many cases is much cheaper to call especially if you have an inclusive-call package such as BT together of free minutes on your mobile phone.

www.saynoto0870.com is a database of the 'real' 01/02 numbers for many UK companies.

Incidentally, if your mobile phone happens to be a pay-monthly contract with O2 (the company, not your phone number) then calls to 0845/0870 numbers are INCLUDED in your free minutes... so use your mobile if you can't find the alternative 01/02 number.

http://www.saynoto0870.com will give you "normal" telephone numbers - not freephone numbers - but these are usually cheaper than 0870. That's as good as you'll get. If they have an 0870 number they most likely won't have an 0800 number anyway.

Some companies give a number for callers outside the UK so you can replace the 0044 with 0 and if you use CALL18866, it'll only cost 5pence for the whole call.

The only real free numbers in the UK are 0500 and 080x numbers. Naturally, ignore the American one which has no effect in this country
