Romeo and Juliet

July inspired the Juliet in me.
And what a Juliet I was!
Skinny, tanned, open-hearted;
The last remnants of adolescence brandishing their swords in violent mood swings.

I kissed him, I’ll admit it. More than once.
And I betrayed…whom? Myself methinks.
Little Miss Perfect’s sudden sin.
It was sudden, and painful and wonderful and exciting and tragic all at once.

We played Shakespeare’s game,
Exchanging cheesy lines, metaphors, similes, the works.
Romance in all its exaggerated glory.
A bittersweet symphony of friendship gone wrong. Or right?

Then Romeo ran off with Rosaline.
Alliteration won the day.
And it was for the best, of course.

But July still brings out that silly Juliet in me…looking for her Romeo.
It seems in his script – the right one – they were both killed off.
So what went wrong with mine?
