I have two 56kbps modems with a phone connection in between. Is data transfer possible ???

Possible, yes... if you have a month to wait for the files to tranfer. If both PCs have network cards it would be much faster (and easier) to connect them with a network cable then to connect them with the modems.

If they are connected via a phoneline, the connection would travel down the phone lines to a server, then back to the other modem. The best way to share data would be to either get a router and network cards, meaning the connection would travel only as far as the router, or just buy two network cards and connect the computers using a crossover cable.
