My husband and I are thinking of getting an elective 4D ultrasound (already had the normal one from Dr. office). We want to see our baby again and get the keepsakes. Has anyone done this and is it worth the money? I will be 26 weeks when we plan to have it done.

I am only 13 weeks pregnant, and I have a appt. to do the 3D/4D when i'm 26 wks. My sister had it done and it is very worth the money! Her ultrasound picture looked exactly how my niece looked when she was first born. It was amazing how the ultrasound picture was so clear! I can't wait till I am that far along till the ultrasound. I am going to Womb with a View and the cost of a 3D/4D is about $165. for 30-45 minutes, 4 color pictures, 4 black and white, dvd of entire screening of ultrasound, gender check, and heart rate. It's worth the memories alone, and a great way to look at a sneak peek of your baby before she or he arrives : ) CONGRATS and GOOD LUCK!

I've never had one, so I can't tell you if they are worth the money or not, but I'm currently studying to be a Sonographer and I can tell you that there ARE possible safety issues. Scanning causes a rise in temperature, and though past research has not been able to prove any harm has come to a baby from ultrasound, most of the research was done before the FDA allowed increases in power outputs, so in other words no-one really knows yet what the effects of these higher intensities might be. The technology is exactly the same as for 2D scans, but those are done for medical reasons, and for the potential benefit to the baby, so the slight risk of any harm is considered to be justified. 3D and 4D scanning normally takes slightly longer than 2D, so the worry is that there could be an increased risk from heating during the longer scan time. All that said, it's probably safe to have ONE 3D scan done in addition to any 2D ones you might need -after all, some women need repeated 2D scans throughout their pregnancies for medical reasons, with no apparent ill effects to the baby. Also, you don't state how many weeks pregnant you are, but you shouldn't really get a 3 or 4D scan in the first 3 months because there's a higher risk of harm to the baby then too. All I'd add is that if you really want to go ahead and get one, make sure you go somewhere with a fully trained radiologist or sonographer, because they will be able to minimise any risk to the baby, such as keeping scanning time and power as short as possible. Good luck!

I got one at 28 weeks. It was awesome. We were so happy to be able to see the baby again. They say you should wait until the baby gains a little fat, because they can look pretty skinny. The best time is around 28-30 weeks (so they say). But it's up to you. I think it was the best $200 we ever spent. We love the pictures and everyone is guessing who she looks like. I can't wait until she's born (3 more weeks) so we can compare the ultrasound pics to the real thing!

Definitely, if you can afford it, GO FOR IT!!! :)

I have not had one myself, btu I have seen many people's pictures that have. In my area, the cost is WAY too expensive for my taste...anywhere from $300 and up!

I have heard from many people that it can be difficult to get a good picture of the baby if it is not head down (not sure if this is true or not). I have also heard of a few people that have had bad experiences at those places...meaning...they paid the full amount and even though the place garuntees a picture of the baby...it doesnt necessarily mean a GOOD picture of the baby. I knwo a few people who paid the full preice and ended up with a picture that you could not identify a single part of the baby on. It looked like a lump...adn they were well far enough along to get a facial sot and everything...
Research some places before you go and pay the money.

Good luck and congrats!!!

Yes!

My husband and I did this at 28 weeks. We were able to get a cd recording of the ultrasound so we made copies and sent them out to all the grandparents. It was so amazing and such an unforgettable keepsake. The grandparents were absolutely in awe!

If you can afford it, I would say to definitely do it. It will last forever and you can play it for your child later on in his/her life. We look at the cd now and it's funny to compare what our son looked like then compared to now (he's 11 months old).

Do it; enjoy it!

Congratulations!!!
