My husband had an oversized decorative sock and it was filled with tons of toys and candy. Mine HAD to be from my drawer and it got the orange, apple, nuts and candy treatment. Gifts went under the tree.

My mom made ours out of felt when we were born, so they were pink or blue with white snowmen on them. When we were older and the stockings started to fall apart, I made some new ones from felt and sewed sequins and beads on them, embroidered our names on them. We usually got bags of Hershey Kisses, some $ coins and pencils or pens and little Whitman Samplers.
When I married, I made my husband one with rabbits on it, and I made our kids their own. We usually put M&Ms in the stocking with some holiday stickers or Christmas jewelry.

As a child, I had a decorated (store bought) Christmas

We had the real socks stuffed with oranges, candy canes etc. My kids have the decorative socks. We put small toys in them. Funny, I never really put too much thought into that until you asked this question. It's funny how one just falls into the stream of how commercialized things are these days.

I had a decorative stocking filled with small gifts, candy, apple, banana, a candy cane and a dollar.
fom my little girl she will have a large decorative stocking filled with toys, candy, chocolate, new tooth brush and whatever I can fit in it

It was a decorated stocking - only filled with candy.
I do the same thing now for my daughter.

My aunt hand-croched a personal stocking for each member of our family the year that they were born or married into our family. I still have mine!
I don't plan to have kids, but if I do, I will ask my aunt to make them stockings, too.

My kids are all grown with homes of their own.I now hang a sexy silk stocking. It always gets filled :)
