Somalia Town Threatens to Behead People Who Don't Pray 5 Times Daily

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Residents of a southern Somalia town who do not pray five times a day will be beheaded, an official said Wednesday, adding the edict will be implemented in three days.

Shops, tea houses and other public places in Bulo Burto, about 124 miles northeast of the capital, Mogadishu, should be closed during prayer time and no one should be on the streets, said Sheik Hussein Barre Rage, the chairman of the town's Islamic court. His court is part of a network backed by armed militiamen that has taken control of much of southern Somalia in recent months, bringing a strict interpretation of Islam that is alien to many Somalis.

Those who do not follow the prayer edict after three days have elapsed, "will definitely be beheaded according to Islamic law," Rage told The Associated Press by phone.

I recognize that not all muslims are violent and some do love peace. But what should be done to protect people from the extremidies of this religion?

Should we set up a peace loving, seperation of church and state respecting, democratic state in the Middle East? Would teaching them our secular values help?

Actually we shouldn't try to stop it with any conventional means of intervention or confrontation. It is extremists like this that we have made as the front for the 'war' we're fighting all over the globe. Religion is religion. It is generally a separate concept from whatever deity or entity that it is based on, and that is universal. Extremism is part of human nature, and until that extremism is used to initiate or carry out an act of war, they should be left to themselves. If anyone intervenes it should be only as a personal response or defense, or at the request of whatever state or nation in which this occurring on the same grounds. War is separate from religion, and separate from spirituality, integrating the two concepts can only turn out catastrophic for all those involved in the process.

There are right wing fanatics in all religions, the trick is to not give them power.

Most claim that they are the most fundamental of all those of their religion, that they know what is needed and that they need to kill everyone who doesn't agree.

When their favorite enemy (usually another right winger of a different religion) makes an easy target as a scapegoat, they make their chosen victims either outraged or fearful enough to give them more power.

Thus evil right wingers from one side support the evil right wingers on the other side. If one side is stopped the folk on the other side wake up and overthrow their own crazies. They can be carefully helped in this, but it can't be done for them.

Mostly the weeds we can do the most about are the ones in our own garden.
