The meaning of this idiomatic expression is taken from the fact that cows are pastured from morning until late afternoon and are taken back to the farm at the end of the day. "Until the cows come home" simply means "until the end of the day or for a long time."

The cows were let loose after milking and they returned on their own, they could not be hurried and it was a leisurely activity. This practice is still prevalent in some parts of the world.

LOL... might desire to be some tardy cows !! Ours walk in from pasture each and each night in basic terms previous to sundown and head to their stalls interior the barn. I even have had a calf interior the homestead... between the daughters' 4-H initiatives - it stayed interior the kitchen for 2 nights for the duration of a snowfall

Speaking from my experience on my grandfathers farm in the 60's and 70's, the cows don't come home you have to go get them. Who else will do it for you Pushkin?

This is an idiom and has two meanings:
-a very long time (the oldest meaning),
-complaining will solve anything.
It is an American expression thought to have originated in the 1700s.
