Well Phurge, I just had a look at cricinfo. For players with more than 50 test innings, post Don Bradman, the career averages look like:
Bradman - 80 innings average of 99.94
then Ponting 179 innings average of 59.99
Selected others
Sobers - 160 innings, average of 57.78
Tendulkar 211 innings, average of 55.39
Lara - 232 innings, average of 52.88
Viv Richards - 182 innings average of 50.23
Over his last 50 test matches, Ricky's test average is 74.48
So there you have it, look at the scoreboard, Ponting is the best batsman of any country since Bradman.

Yes especially for consistancy when he comes on your sure at least a half century will be scored
Not dissing other great players like Lara or Tandulkar but I think one innings of 400 doesn't make for the best batsmen we would never do that against a quality bowling line up and people know it

Of course not. Not even close.
Tendulkar, Lara, Viv Richards, Barry Richards...there are AT LEAST 10 better batsmen than Ponting since Bradman's day.
He's good, but he doesnt come within touching distance of Bradman.

Though he has not yet surpassed the records of most centuries and most runs in the Tests and One Day Inernationals, he holds the highest average in batting in a calender year. Till he surpasses the records of centuries and most runs, he cannot be termed as the best yet. But I am sure, the way he performs now he may achieve the above tasks also in the near future.

It is true Ricky plays the best in these days.
But after Brad Man, there are great players like Sir Gary Sobers, Vivin Richards, Sachin Tendulkar, Inzamam Ul Haq etc

i would say he is not the best batsman, and not even bradman. great players have some record to manifest their greatness hence i would have to saybrian lara is the best batsman in the world. he has all the records to show from most runs in test cricket to most runs in county cricket, so i would have to say that he is the best based on the records he holds to show his achievement!!!

Absolutely not. He is playing very these days but if you look into his performance during his entire career, he is far behind many other players including Lara and Sachin.
