This opens a big subject about definitions. It is the custom to regard the German invasion of Poland in 1939 as the beginning of the Second World War, and the attack on Pearl Harbor as the start of the war in the Far East. On closer examination one finds that Japan had been fighting in China for some years, and the attack on Pearl Harbor was the Japanese reaction to American policies on the Sino-Japanese conflict. There is a very powerful pragmatic argument that WW2 started when the Japanese invaded Manchuria during the mid-1930's. After that it was downhill all the way.

Well, World War Two officially started with the invasion of Poland in September of 1939, but at that time, the conflict was already pretty much inevitable. The most important thing to happen in 1935 that's pertinent to WW2 was Hitler's open announcement of Germany's efforts to re-arm themselves (in direct violation of the Versailles Treaty). In Britain, Neville Chamberlain (the British P.M.) was doing his best to appease Hitler. We all know how that turned out. As to books, any self respecting book on the history of WW2 should start in the immediate aftermath of WW1, and then travel forward in time, in order to set the stage for the war. So for books: pretty much anything (you may need to do some reading)
