The accepted end date is easy. That was April 30, 1975 when Saigon fell to the North Vietnamese army.
The start date is very difficult to determine. Most American history books put the start date in 1964 when we started sending combat troops there, but American involvement in Vietnam can be traced almost 10 years before that.
