I remember when Hot Topic was cool and only carried Gothic clothing, along with band t-shirts that could still get you respect if you wore them.

Just to let you know...black pants, studded belts, and corset tops are not Emo. They're called black pants, studded belts and corset tops. Not to mention of all the Emo people I know...they shop at Old Navy and Gap, wear tight medium wash jeans and polo shirts...

So you want your dad to let you dress more new-age-punk (what is now being sold at Hot Topic)...Your mom agrees but your dad doesn't. Dad's usually do this for a reason. Your his little girl, he doesn't want you to dress what may be considered inappropriate in his eyes. If he doesn't like it, then don't force it on him. How would you like it if he forced you to eat or do something you didn't like?

Try telling your dad how you feel. Changing how you dress doesn't change who you are! If you stick Donald Trump and Bill Gates in thongs and high heels, there still going to be dorky, old, rich guys (even if they look terrible). Sorry for the image, but it does get the point across though, right?

Also tell your dad that your mom supports you and that he should too. Although this kind of puts your dad on a guilt trip he might loosen up on the whole clothing issue. Good luck!

As a father, I'll tell you that IMHO, as long as she's "modestly" dressed, I don't care if my daughter wears black, white, brown, or flourescent green with flourescent pink trim!

I'd suggest that if you're going to express your "emo," (and my daughter only dressed as emo once, just for fun) you start off slowly incorporating pieces of the outfits into your "normal, repressed" wardrobe.

A slow, incremental transformation will be much easier for him to handle than to suddenly be thrust into full-blown acceptance.

Consider this. If you throw a frog in a boiling pan of water - it hops out! However, if you put a frog in a pan of warm water, and then slowly turn up the heat, you can boil it without it even noticing. (Yes, I know it's a cruel, horrilbe example. But it's true.)

Just don't dress emo. What have you got to be emo about anyway? if you've got the money to shop at hottopic then you should be happier. Just return the hott topic clothes. As for the dad thing, i guess i can sort of relate, my dad won't let me dress anyway i want either

I have emo friends and they pretty much developed their styles pretty slowly, like over a month or 2. They started with emo-style earrings and black clothes and tight jeans and stuff like that. They also started getting music from Slipknot and bands like that. Talk to your dad casually about wanting to change...he shouldn't have control over what styles you choose.

Hint: most parents are that way. One agrees the other usually won't. You just have to do what makes you happy and hope your dad understands/respects that.

Its just clothing for cryin out loud, give it any label you want but you are still you.

Show him you are a capable person. Help out around the house with chores and do your best to show you respect him and his opinion. That usually helps in making him understand that just because you dress one way doesn't mean you're a failure.

Maybe you can do it little by little and let him get used to it.
