If you don't know what a is, you can't find an answer, because you have two unknowns (a, and the value of the log).

Note: the other guys are right, using the properties of logs, but you didn't specify that you were looking to "simplify". I thought you were looking for a numerical answer.

log_a (sqrt(1.2)) = 1/2 log_a (1.2)

log_a (1.2 x 3.9) = log_a 1.2 + log_a 3.9

By the way:
log_a x = log x / log a ( with log having any base you want)

Sure. It's ln(1.2)/(2*ln(a)).

I'm guessing that you mean 1.2*3.9 in the second one, in which case it's (ln(1.2)/ln(a)) + (ln(3.9)/ln(a)).
