Roman Holiday is wonderful! Its about this princess (Audrey Hepburn) who is tired of her life as a princess ( I watched this some years ago, and pretty much all I remember is that its a gorgeous movie) . Anyway, she runs away, and Gregory Peck finds her and takes her to the hotel.. I think. He's a newspaper reporter, I believe. And they fall in love.. I just can't remember all the details, I'm sorry! Another good one is Cleopatra, starring Elizabeth Taylor...although I suppose its a bit too long.

Besides romance movies, look for what are called "women's pictures" from the 1930s, 1940s - many people like a specific actress like Claudette Colbert, Bette Davis or Joan Crawford or Barbara Stanwyck and try to catch up on all their films first, then branch out. Also look for screwball comedies, which are the forebear of romantic comedies.
Here's a starter group:
1930s
It Happened One Night - classic with Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable. Catch any of Frank Capra's early stuff, it usually has a strong romance at its core, like "Meet John Doe".
Midnight - try to catch it on cable or rent it on videotape, it's not on DVD yet. Claudette Colbert's best screwball.
Wuthering Heights
In Name Only (very soapy)
Dark Victory
A Star is Born - the original with Janet Gaynor and Frederic March; get a good quality copy to watch, the last scene is in stunning color
The Divorcee is a very early talkie with Norma Shearer, and it might be too stagy for your taste, but it's what's called a "pre-code" - before they got really particular about sex scenes, implications, etc in the movies. It's pretty edgy.
Bringing Up Baby - Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant
Ninotchka - Garbo's best film, and it's funny. Any of her earlier dramas may appeal to you.
1940s
Christmas in Connecticut
Rebecca
Casablanca
Anything with Bogie and Bacall: the Big Sleep is probably the best overall, but I really love Dark Passage.
Now, Voyager - also had Paul Henreid in it, this is one tearjerker almost everyone of my female friends loves
Libelled Lady - and almost anything pairing William Powell and Myrna Loy The Thin Man movies
Ghost and Mrs. Muir
Mildred Pierce (a film noir with romantic overtones)
The Clock - a very sweet wartime romance
The Philadelphia Story
The Best Years of Our Lives is about three families and their soldiers who just came back from WWII. Romance and drama. Really good, a four star movie everyone should see today.
1950s
Sabrina
Funny Face
Desk Set
One of the most famous would be "Love is a Many Splendored Thing" but it may seem kind of stereotyped and cheesy today.
The African Queen
Singing in the Rain
From Here to Eternity - it's based on James Jones' book about the Army prior to Pearl Harbor. Very dark and gritty, but has one of the most famous romance scenes of all time.
1960s
Dr. Zhivago - this was "the" romance picture of the 1960s.
The Apartment
I suspect you might also enjoy "The Women" and "When Ladies Meet", which are about how women relate to one another, including when they're both competing for the same man.
