I've had people come and clean my computer for me many times, but I've finally decided to go on and do it for myself. The only problem is, I don't know where to start, what to look for, my Anti-virus doesn't work but I KNOW that i have some viruses, and my computer is lagging more often. Does anybody have any websites or tips?

You can also get some free Adware/Spyware software from www.Download.com, that should help out things too. I would recommend Spybot S&D (Safer-Networking), Ad-Aware (LavaSoft), SpywareBlaster (JavaCool Software), and of course Windows Defender. I recommend using a couple of different ones, what one doesn't catch the others might. Also, you can delete all your Temp files - internet and Windows. You can also run an online Virus Scan straight from Symantec's Website, http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/home_homeoffice/index_virus.html. There are other sites that offer free online scanning. Hope this helps...

For clutter (trash files to get rid of, eating too much space) try going through Recycle Bin and seeing what you REALLY don't need then deleting forever. Then go to My Computer and right-click your main drive for properties and find out if you need to de-fragment, and wait through the long, tedious, process of letting de-fragmenting to let the de-fragmenting to squish things all together for better performance.

For a good (in *my* opinion) anti-virus program go to www.grisoft.com and fetch their free anti-virus program then go find spybot search-and-destroy and lavasoft ad-aware. General Geek also has lots of free software downloads but is not necessarily a good *reading* place.

Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html

If you don't have virus scan software you need to get one. You can certainly reformat your computer. That would clean everything. If you just want to un-clutter it, start with deleting the temp folders in the system folder. Open the browser and click tools, internal options and click delete files under temp internet files. Next, defrag your computer.
