Per the Judge I'm in a group that is likely to be picked for a trial that will last a week. The final selection is today and I really can't take that much time off work. I'm self employed but the court is not allowing that as an excuse any more. Any tips on how one can get out of being selected with out breaking the law?

When asked if you have read anything about the case: say yes.

When asked 'so, how do you feel about _____________? (fill in the blank with whatever the case is about, eg. single mothers; blacks; policemen; etc.): say something biased

Tell them that since you are self employed that if would create an undue hardship for taking a week off right now. Oh, & you believe in the death penalty. The Defense usually lets you go after that.

The trial probably won't last a week anyway.

I just got out of jury duty and I did it legally. Do a little research and answer the lawyers questions by quoting the law. Lawyers do not want people with a little legal knowledge on the jury; they will bounce you faster than a tennis ball if you show some smarts.

I appreciate your situation, but consider this: you live in a country where (at least for now) we have fair and just laws.

There is no secret police that come take you away in the middle of the night and throw you in jail without due process.

Be thankful that (at least for now), we have rights.
And from the troops fighting for freedom to the average Jane and Joe American, we all must do our part to protect and pay for those freedoms.

So my advice to you is to make the best of it and understand that without YOU and me, democracy does NOT work.

When you find out what the trial is about think of any way you could be biased so that you would not make a fair decision.

Even if you are smart and know what they are saying, say you don't understand. It gets me out of it every single time. I will ask them to ask their questions in a different way, so they will see I'm trying to grasp what they are asking, but I will still say I don't understand. Then they say, I'm free to go.

Simply make it know that you are predisposed against the defendant based on some characteristic such as age, race or sex and that you don't think you can be impartial.
