I was under the impression that paramedics worked on ambulances and firefighters put out fires and did rescue.

A lot of fire departments have personnel who are cross trained in both paramedicine and fire fighting. These firefighter/paramedics are usually rotated through the fire engines and the ambulances, so they can gain experience at each job. That's why (at least in the fire departments I'm familiar with) you will find paramedics on the fire truck. It's just their turn on the truck that day.
Hope this helps!

In many areas, paramedics and firefighters travel to the same scene, although the particulars vary from area to area. There is always a possibility of injury to a firefighter. In the area where I live, the paramedics go to all scenes of active house fires and hazardous materials spills.

ARE YOU SERIOUS? Did you even watch ever your local news or about 9-11. The paramedics are there to save people once they are rescued from a fire or if a fireman is in need of help. Think about it. PARAMEDICS FIRE ENGINE
Fire engines carry firemen to fight a fire. Do you know how extreme that is?

Firefighters themselves, get hurt alot. An non firefighting EMT is not equipped or trained to help a fallen cop or fireman in a conflagration. Smart departments employ firefighters 3 days a week, 12 hrs per day, or such and encourage them off to classes or bring classes to them to develop dual abilities in their people.K? There are some PAs out there too. I'm glad.
