I have a chance to leave the company to work for myself but I feel guilty about leaving my coworkers who rely on my a lot. The company will not do well with out me and it's possible that many other people will quit if I do. Please help.

If the new opportunity is a good one, take it. It's not your company, it's your bosses - he needs to deal with it. As you said, you don't get the respect you deserve and you probably don't get paid what you should if everyone relies on you 'a lot'. Move forward with your career and wish them the best.

Working for yourself is a big step. Most people start out part time; will this work for you?

You owe nothing to your company unless you are being amply rewarded with a share of the profits. That seems like a cold attitude but it's the facts. Give plenty of notice so that you can train others. If you wake up another four years from now and are still in the same spot, what would you think about yourself?

If you decide to leave to work for yourself, remember that if you are that critical to the company you may have a great chance to get hired back as a "consultant." When you give your notice, offer to come back on an hourly basis to train or do whatever it is you do so well.
