1. Waking Life [ a Very thought-provoking film about life. Adds onto your 'what if's about life, and the possiblities as well. ]
2. Before Sunset [ haven't seen Before Sunrise, but dying too :) ]
3. Good Will Hunting [ well thought out film/plot/ideas! ]
4. The Village [ Although, the plot in the end sucked, it would've made for a really 'Good' film about People, love... the ending just turned out 'shallow' somehow, and not 'profound' as it had the potential to be and should've been. ]
5. American Beauty [ First movie that captivated me about life ]
6. The Life Of David Gale
7. Capote
8. The Truman Show [ Loved the ending lol, "In case I don't see ya.. Good Afternoon, Good Evening & Good'nite." ]
9. Crash [ (Y) ]
10. The Butterfly Effect

Im sure there's more.... can't think of many right now.

It sounds like you're a big Sean Penn fan.

I noticed you like About Schmidt. I liked it okay - my dad (about Schmidt's age) really enjoyed it - but then I read a review noting that it had been changed a lot from the original novel, lots of aspects were taken out, regarding the man's relationship with his daughter.

Anyway, ten thoughtprovoking films...

The Fog of War
Fail Safe
Bridge on the River Kwai
Das Boot
Rashomon
Twelve O Clock High
All the President's Men
High Noon
Cabaret - and Madchen in Uniform - at first you think they're both just about various relationships, but as you keep watching, you start to realize their world is being changed. Madchen involves a young girl who falls in love with her teacher, but it's as much about rising authoritarianism in Germany. The last shot in "Cabaret" is pretty scary for the same reasons.
Good Night and Good Luck

Some other ones to chew on would be
Matewan and almost anything by John Sayles
Thelma and Louise
The Killing Fields
In the Bedroom
Gattaca
Memento (saw someone else mention it - reminded me how good that was!)
