I am passionate about this subject...

OK in Chicago last year, i worked in a school district that allowed the teachers to come in their everyday street clothing. most of which were things you would put on if you were heading to the local club scene. Over all i think it gave the wrong impression over all about whats appropriate and what is not.
How are we to teach children to act and do right if we ourselves do not? I think over all there was a lack of respect by the children as they felt Mrs. Jones was just like them , instead of something they should strive to become. On field trips and other functions the clothing selection got even worst by the teachers, all in all it was more like an episode of Americas Top Teacher than school. as the teachers competed against the student s and other teachers to look their best. What is the knowledge being passed in that?
Now in Texas this year... things are different. The teachers wear the same thing, everyday of the week , which is a type of uniform. Same causally dress shirts and slacks and or skirts, Fridays Jeans are allowed with yet another school tee. The students, are not required to wear uniforms, but most choose to dress just like he teachers for the week, as the same attire is also available for them to purchase and wear. All of it has the school name and logo on it to show school spirit and teamwork. As a result i feel, the teachers have more time to focus on matters of students and education. They are sending a message, by their appearance, that automatically demands respect. it also send s message to the children about the importance of hygiene and how to dress on a job.

Uniform For Teachers

I don't think that as far as the student/teacher teacher relationship goes that there are many benefits. If some teachers dress inappropriately, uniforms would cut down on that because it would take the focus off of their bodies/clothes and back to the class and learning. The personal benefits would be not having to pick out clothes each day, saving money, saving time.

The disadvantage is that it makes it seem as though students are somehow equal to teachers and they are absolutely not. Teachers shouldn't blend in... especially in settings where there are large amounts of people (school assemblies, events, etc.). Teachers should be quickly identifiable. When I was in highschool, our teachers wore uniforms and as a student I thought it was a bad idea for those reasons.

I can not think of any professionals who are required to wear uniforms to work. The only benefit of a teacher wearing a uniform would be that people could easily identify who was a teacher and what school (s)he worked at. This might not be a great benefit for teachers. Where would it stop? Would administrators and support personnel wear uniforms also? Would the students wear uniforms also? There is a small percentage of teachers who dress inappropriately for work. Their administrators always have the responsibility to call them into a meeting and explain the dress code and then follow up with verbal or written warnings. Evaluations have a section for rating the teachers on their appearance. Would the uniforms be the same for all teachers? There are people teaching college prep, physical education, music, art (getting paint, glue, etc. on their clothes), shop classes (machinery, also possibly getting dirty), preschool (on the floor with children, hands on activities, special education (having to restrain students, change diapers, help with feeding tubes). One uniform would not be appropriate for all teachers. In the state of Nevada the employer must supply uniforms at no cost to the employee. That would mean the taxpayers would pay for all the uniforms for all the teachers. I don't do laundry everyday so that would mean a minimum of 5 full uniforms.

I can't think of any disadvantages of teachers wearing uniforms. I personally would love to have a dress code (specific requirements) or uniform. It would make dressing in the morning that much quicker!

Teachers are professionals like lawyers and architects. I went to university for SIX YEARS to become a teacher. If I wanted to wear a uniform I would work at McDonalds. Dress codes are insulting to professional teachers. They are demeaning and suggest that we are not capable of choosing our own clothes.

Rather than have a uniform, schools should have dress codes for staff. Principals should be responsible for enforcing the dress code. If teachers are dressing inappropriately, the blame should be on their supervisor. As a professional, I don't wear mini-skirts or tank-tops to work. If there is no dress code in place, teachers can't be blamed for their fashion choices.

It depends, some people like strict professionals would say its good for them to have uniforms because they are more professional that way. Some would think its good because you can become cool with the teachers or become friends with them

It denotes unity and cooperation, on the other hand it is one way for the teacher to stop having problems everyday of what dress to wear.
