Squier 51
Yamaha Pacifica
I do not recommend mini-guitars unless the student is really tiny. The two I recommended are versatile, professional quality guitars that could be played on stage, no problem.
Keep in mind that an electric guitar also requires an amplifier. A good bedroom practice amp for under $150 might be:
Vox DA-5
Roland Micro Cube

You should get him a guitar pack, it comes with an amp, guitar of course, a strap, case, picks, all the necessary stuff for a beginner, they run about 100 bucks give or take. you can get them at a regular store usually(like best buy, etc.)and big name guitar brands make some of them(fender, etc.) Then if he takes guitar lessons, or learns on his own, he can upgrade in a couple years to something better, but if he, like some kids, likes the idea, more than actually using it, then you wont be out tons of money.

$199.99 Epiphone Les Paul Special II Player Pack
This is a Deal !!
I don't reccomend mini-guitars. In a few years they outgrow them, might as well buy the real deal now and save yourself the dual expense.

It is best to have the person decide on his own as every player has a different guitar that he is comfortable to play with.
