How about John Chavis? He was a free African American during the antebellum (before the Civil War) in North Carolina. He taught both white and African American children. His school was one of the best in the state of North Carolina at the time, which is a HUGE acheivement for an African American in a slave state like North Carolina. He was also a Presbyterian minister and preached to both whites and African Americans.

He may not have an impact today, but he played a large role of helping whites in the early 19th century North Carolina to realize that there were some African Americans who were smart, generous, and in other ways did not fit the stereotype that existed at the time.

One person who I think has made a difference for women, african americans, and victims of child abuse is Oprah Winfrey. For a someone who has so much, she gives that much more back and that's truly the way to making a positive difference.

What about Florence Nightingale? At the time she went into nursing it was not a career for nice young ladies -- in fact, it was something which retired prostitutes tended to go into. Florence Nightingale was a brilliant young woman who nevertheless felt called to take up nursing and she revolutionised the sanitation of military hospitals during the Crimean War, thus not only saving many lives, but setting standards for nursing which are now applied world wide. http://www-history.mcs.st-andrews.ac.uk/Biographies/Nightingale.html

There was also Joseph Lister, who discovered antiseptic and saved countless lives as a result, both during his lifetime and after it. http://www.nahste.ac.uk/isaar/GB_0237_NAHSTE_P0389.html
