I have a 9 yr old daughter, who has a very best friend. Her friend is also 9yrs old, and lives out in the country. It is a long walk from the school. I picked my daughter up, and it was already getting dark, and lashing with rain. Her friend said goodbye, at my car, and i asked if she was being picked up. She said no, her mum told her to walk home, will do her good!! The little girl said she gets terrified on the country lanes, when alone. I obviously gave the poor girl a lift to her door, and her mum was in, car parked outside!!
Is it just me? I think this is awful, she is vulnerable at 9yrs old, too young to walk all alone, in remote places, in the dark.

Don`t get me wrong, i no way want to interefere, or upset her mother, but i am worried about her safety. It is very difficult, knowing what to do for the best, but i think the child is more important, than stepping on toes. I will just take her myself in future, when she is left to make her own way home. I am not gonna apologise, for worrying about a 9yr old, out there alone for a length of time...sorry, but i just think it is wrong.

you are absolutely right to be concerned - with all the weirdos out there now dark lanes are certainly no place for a young girl to be walking on!
You need to either speak to this girls mother yourself - or report her to the school and let them deal with it - if you dont get satisfaction from doing this I would report her to social services - there is no normal loving mother expect their child to do this.
You're obviously a very sensible and worthwhile mother and your own daughter is very lucky!
I hope you resolve this situation. xx

No your not wrong, 9 is way too young to be walking home alone especially down dark country lanes, what is this mother thinking! Have a quiet word with the teacher, just so they are aware, maybe they could have a quiet word with the mother. I know we like our kids to grow up independent but this takes it too far, she's only 9!

That should be reported to the head teacher of the school, not in an accusing sort of way but as a friendly, concerned parent - it could be that the mother has some sort of problem which prevents her from driving (drink?) and that she would appreciate help in getting her child picked up from school. It could be that she is just a little naive about her child's safety. Anyway, the school should be able to sort it out - my child's school always had a policy of holding on to every kid who had not been picked up at the school gates until a responsible adult came to collect them.

Well done for spotting that and for carrying out your civic duty.

I think its down to facts, do you know all of the facts? Do you know the mother? Do you know anything about the family? I have 2 sons and completely agree that I would not want my kids walking home in the dark like that. But knowing that some kids come from difficult backgrounds, maybe the way of tackling this is to mention to the school and get them to bring it up. Stay out of it. For you know nothing to the background....

It is horrible. I would keep my eye out for other abuse or negelct. There isn't much you can do about her having to walk home but I would definetly watch for other signs. Sounds like her mom isn't to sweet to make her daughter walk home in the rain when she is sitting at home doing nothing. Maybe the little girl could spend the night at your house one night and you could gently ask her questions. Like when you sit down to eat dinner say "What do you do for dinner at your house?" Just to see what her home life is like.

I think if it had been me, I would have already called the local child welfare service, or the police. If this child's mother did it that one time, my bet is she's done it before, and I would feel justified in reporting it, since the child's life was being put in jeopardy.
