Well maybe i shouldn't put the word 'soon' there but will we ever get to see The Hobbit in the cinemas? I would love to see Thranduil and Smaug and Beorn and a whole lot more cool characters. And i really hope Peter Jackson will direct it. Will we?

New Line has 'The Hobbit' in development with a release date projected in 2009. According to recent news stories they are currently shopping for directors. Peter Jackson is not directing since New Line has refused to stop cheating Peter Jackson out of the profit share from the LOTR movies.

It will come out eventually, to capatalize off the success of LotR. But, like it's been sad, Jackson probably won't direct it, or have any part in it. Which is total crap. I've been waiting to see this for a while now, and when it does finally come out, it'll be a 2nd rate hack job.
New Line needs to suck up their pride and give Jackson whatever he wants to do the film.
This will go down as one of the worst descisions in movie history, if Jackson doesn't direct it.

No. There are all kinds of ownership rights, etc. that are preventing Peter Jackson from directing/producing The Hobbit. Which is really too bad.
