raci_trac is on the right track but you have to go back further..such as to 1623 (numbers!) and another island story to get the basis of Lost.

Then don't you find those backstories somewhat familiar...like you've heard them all before somewhere. The first few were from that famous collection of humanist writings from 1623 then they seemed to change to a set of spiritual writings even further back. Then there's Kate's which are all greek to me.

Who are the others ? Great film is The Others based indirectly on The Turn of the Screw. Theres a line in The Others that explains the whole of Lost, but then again so did the others book club in one minute flat! They are the good guys, and when they take people's unbaptised kids away they're just doing their job.

Put it all together you've a conflict going on on some level between the humanist and the spiritual. But at what level is this purgatory and the children's limbo. Given all the symbolism and metaphor within the characters and plots is it really purgatory or has Hurley got it right and someone is in a coma dreaming this from their subconcious?

Yes. It's a fictional TV show about a group of people who miraculously survived a plane crash and ended up on an island where nothing is what it seems.

But seriously folks, I am not sure we'll ever know the total secret until the last episode airs.

yes the secret is that they can have a bunch of people from different nations and have us all under a cloud of ignorance for months and months on end. didn't they go cable in the UK?( or something like that?) they have us here in the u.s. on hiatus and they are going to come on at a different time when they come back.( in friggin february) i love the show so i am going to keep watching. i hope that it aint no dream, or that they are all dead, or they are in a snow globe held by a mentally ill child(st elsewhere),or even friggin purgatory. i will die.they need to hurry back before i go insane!!!!!!!!!!!

The one i heard most was that the island is purgatory and as they die they go to either heaven or hell. see how the fake priest died last week? He said he didn't want to be forgiven and the crazy black smoke got him. Weird, anyway i heard that there are seven series's of it are going to be made in total so we have have to wait a little for the real answer. sorry dude.

During the first series I was convinced they were all dead and in limbo...now I haven't a clue what it's about. But so long as Sawyer stays alive and well in the show, I'm hooked!!!

Go read "The Mysterious Island of Dr. Morreau." It is based on that book.
