Hickory-Efficiency weigh 1 cubic foot dry, 63#.Next best black birch @ 49weight 1 cubic foot dry. And son next, white oak, pecan beech sugar [hard] maple, black oak white ash yellow birch @ 40 #, red soft maple white birch, black cherry, Tupelo or gum,sycamore and american @34# 1 cubic foot. Elm in smoky. Southern yellow pine is the best softwood but very smoky. . Pecan ,birch black oak, beech and white ash have little smoke.

If you only have hardwood you will always have a hard time starting a fire even when it is adequately dry. Try to trade some of the hardwood or by some pine or other softwood, Again make sure its dry. If you can not tell dry from wet you can soak one piece in water for a couple hours then compare its weight with the other wood of about the same time. The wood you soaked should be a lot heavier. Build your fire with paper and kindling and stick a few sticks of softwood on top. When the fire is going good add the hardwood. Keep a watch on the fire and add more hardwood when you have mostly red coals and little flame.

All of the above are good answers. If you ever find anyone clearing an orchard, try to get the wood. I've found all nut and fruit wood works well.

Oak is good, and so is madrone. I find madrone burns faster, but it puts out a lot more heat btus.
