The comparision is not to dwarf one event over the other. It is to remind people of the devastation of Dec 7.
But there was a plus side (ironically) to Dec 7. In a difficult war, the entry of the US, proved the turning point, from probable depravity and defeat, to victory and freedom.
Churchill himself admitted, he went to bed a bit better on DEc 7, not because of the horrific events in Hawaii, but that in Japan's mistaken beliefs, Britain now had the US to bank on, instead of being left to face the might of the German army alone.

Even in Asia, had the Japanes solly concentrated on the Pacific Islands and SEA, without bringing the US into the picture, life and strife would have been far longer and worse for the peoples of the affected countries. Instead of a 4 year war, they might have lived a decade under the yoke of Japanese cruelty.

A special word of thanks and commemoration to those veterans in Hawaii, meeting for probably the last time, this year.

9/11 is far worse. More people died and those who were killed were civilians.

Pearl Harbor saw about 2200 deaths. But, 3,000 civilians died on 9/11.

Plus, the reaction to Pearl Harbor made sense. Japan attacked us and we declared war on them.

But, 9/11 was waged by Jihadists. Who do you declare war against? There are Jihadists in Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Pakistan, India, Indonesia, etc.

The country has had to struggle in figuring how to defeat Jihad since 9/11. Therefore, the problems added on have made it all the more worse.

Since the death toll was about the same I would have to go with 9/11 because of the psychological impact. Pearl Harbor happened without the "benefit" of instantaneous communication. There was radio and telegraph but that's not the same as seeing live images on television.

Also Pearl Harbor is a military base thousands of miles from the main land. The towers were a civilian target which I think leaves the average person feeling more vulnerable.

Great question. I would give the nod to 9/11 because on Dec. 7, 1941 the Japanese military attacked a US military installation. On 9/11/01, a bunch of religious fanatics killed over 3000 civilians.

Dec 7, 1941 no contest. But America responded with courage and resolve then, they did what it took to get the job done. Today we do not have the spine to defeat our enemies, democrats use the war for political gain, republicans are afraid to pursue an all out war for fear of losing political points. We are in a mess.

Dec. 7th was horrific...but in the scheme of things 911 I believe was more devastating to the nation as it was broadcast as it happened. With Dec. 7th it was a newspaper and radio thing...with 911 it was immediate and sickening impact. You didn't hear of people dying...you watched it.

Well, let's see: On December 7, the Japanese attacked A MILITARY BASE catching soldiers and sailors sleeping ('twas Sunday). On September 11, the enemy attacked INNOCENT CIVILIANS (see the diff now?).

The two dates should never be compared. There is no reason for competition, the US was attacked and thousands died.

Families from both events will be hurt and insulted (and they should be) if they are 'awarded' second place.

The reasons and aftermath of both tragedies should be examined for handling and global effects - to guide us in taking preventive steps and in creating a procedure for non-dictatorial bipartisan actions.

Its said to think how many people will not even know what happened on the 7th......i think DEC 7Th was more important seeing that it launched America into WW2 one of the most important wars of all time and sep 11Th well that just launched bush into his holy war

Sept. 11. On Dec. 7 we knew who our enemy was. With this new group, they are hard to find to kill. A more dangerous type of warfare because they like to kill innocent women and children without warning all in the name of some stupid religion.

I think Sept 11 is worse, because it was against innocents. It gave Bush the justification to go after certain entities, and I'm just glad he was in office when it happened. The democrats would have launched a major diplomatic campaign and... maybe a couple of cruise missiles.
