There isn't enough oil produced in the US to meet the needs of America. That's why attacking Iran (the 2nd largest producer), is a very unattractive option.

Yes and no yes we should just because it would help me and you out at the gas pump and in time lessen the need for oil in the U.S. on the other had no because if we start using all our oil and the middle east tells us where to stick it we might be in a bind or a pinch......also your oil company make way to much money in the middle east and when the lobby in Washington and had over white envelopes filled with green backs you know which way the vote is going to swing

As a matter of fact, USA has more known OIL & GAS reserves than the entire middle east put together.
Reasons why some dont want to extract more US oil can be briefly put as under:
1. The cost of extracting oil in USA is much higher than extracting, buying & transporting it to the USA.
2. There are sections of decision makers in the USA who believe that getting the oil of other nations out & preserving their own serves long term strategic interests ofthe USA
3. USA & allies control MOST oil from the middle east and attempt to control what they already dont
4. Huge profits are generated by USA companies from middle East operations
5. USA is running on Petro Dollars. Else, it would be a bankrupt country-unable to service its huge debts running into trillions of Dollars
6. Oil extraction is a rather dirty business- the rather easy lifestyles of US citizens dont really gel with the risks & labour involved.
7. Large chunk of Petro dollars earned by the middle east nations is ploughed back into USA- as investments, goods purchased, luxuries availed, visits, pleasures of the skin, et al

okay so the Hippies kinda have part of it right, drilling does cause wildlife damage and although i NOT a Tree hugger, i still think that wildlife is kind of important. On the other hand..... The tree huggers are also the ones who drive the Suv's and the gigantic conversion vans. So in my opinion the groups need to agree to disagree..... yes drill for oil but dont stop looking for cleaner, cheaper alternatefuel sources.

I live in Oklahoma and was here for the last oil boom. It was fascinating to watch and drive around and see all of the oil rigs. We have enough oil in this country alone to keep us going, but where do we buy oil from? dah.......... It's all about money and when a President watches other countries back and not his own, somethings up. Greed is an ugly thing isn't it?

Because without oil to hold over the heads of Americans, Democrats lose another strong vote-buying/threatening tool.
That's why they won't privatize Social Security. How else are they going to scare millions of elderly people into voting Democrat?
That's why they want prisoners to vote. How many thieves, rapists, and murders are going to vote Republican?
They promise to steal money from the "rich" and give it to the "poor." Most people just aren't smart enough to realize that they are not "poor" by government standards. Ask a Democrat to define the "middle class" that will get the tax breaks. Trust me, it's probably not you.

Because the US still believes that they will eventually OWN Iraqi oil and that they will tap into Iranian oil. However, the Middle East now knows the plan of the United States. It will take mounds of diplomacy to erase the images of death and destruction in Iraq to bring about any semblance of trust between the Middle East and the United States again. The Middle East will do what is necessary to retain control of THEIR OIL.The best we can hope for are lowered oil prices.

Because that is really not our goal. Why do you think we went to Irag to begin with and why we are still there. Of course, everyone knows, to secure the oil wells for the wealthiest here to make even more money and have even more power.
