Once more from the top:

Netherlands: legal since 1984 residency required
Belgium: legal since 1987 residency not mandatory
Spain: legal since 2005 residency required
Canada: legal since 2005 residency not mandatory
South Africa: legal since Nov. 30th 2006 residency required.

Mass. in the US is the only state to recognize and perform same sex marriage.

** non madatory residence means you can marry there but are not required to live there. In Canada, several Americans have been married but live in the US. All nations which have gay marriage do recognize the marriages from other countries.

Massachusetts (if you live either there or Rhode Island), Canada, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, and South Africa. Legislation soon to come in New Jersey. Vermont & Connecticut have Civil Unions, and California has Domestic Partnerships of a sort.

Massachusetts is the only state that has been formerly recognized where same sex couples can marry. The catch is you have to be a resident of Massachusetts, since it is the only state officially recognized, you can't go back to California, Florida, New York or any other state and get benefits or be recognized. Good luck
