presumably because the water reflects and absorbs some of the light so less light is reflected by the soil, making its colour darker.

like other things on earth, dirt evolves. prehistoric dirt, in the age of the dinosaurs, actually just dissipated when it was attacked by water. but over the eons that have past dirt evolved a defence mechanism against its mortal enemy water. it gets dirtier when it is attacked by water and forms into messy mud. have you ever wondered why dinosaurs didn't need boots, it was because mud didn't exist until the rise of the mammals.
