There's many different kinds of LAN cable testers.

The most basic ones just check the wiring of the cable, to ensure that there are no crossed/incorrect pairs.

From there you move to testers that can tell you the length of each cable that you test.

There are also testers to will certify the cable (Cat 5, Cat 5e, Cat 6, etc). More advanced testers (like some for fiber) can tell you exactly where the fault occurs on a cable.

I use mine on cables that I make myself to see if they work right. It's also good for testing/making crossover cables to go between my router and a switch or hub.
