I make baby quilts. It is very simple and they are so small that it doesn't take alot of work. You can piece the pieces together by hand and then instead of sewing through the entire thing to "quilt" it, you can tie it with ribbons. Even at a year old a quilt is a special gift and you can find so many bright and fun fabrics, even for boys. A craft store or book store would have a book on how to and probably some great photos of inspiring projects. I don't use a pattern though, I just make up my own. It is addictive makes and the quickest easiest most special baby gifts. Something that they will keep for a long time. ps. If you aren't the quilty type... find out if there is a local Quilt guild in your area or quilt shop and contact them to see if anyone would create a custom project for you at a reasonable price!

There are always engraved silver things, a picture frame or a rattle.
Babies first savings account.
Name a star after the child. (I just Googled it and it starts at $20.00)
Clothing is outgrown quickly. They always get so many fabric and infant type things.
Start a Genealogy for the baby that can be completed till adulthood.
I hope there is something here that interests you.
Happy Holidays.

At Christenings people usually give silver such as a photo frame, a money box, first set of baby utensils (knife fork and spoon) etc. You can even get some very nice birth certificate holders engraved with a name.

A keepsake of some sort for example a St Christopher perhaps? Alternatively why not buy something he actually needs like clothes or an educational toy?

How about a silver piggy bank with the baby's initials engrave on it. You can always put in any extra money in the box to make it up to the amount you want to give.

How about some shares? If you don't want to spend a lot you could set up a savings account for him. You could name a star after him. How about a tree for his parents garden (although that's not really for him)? More traditional gifts are: bible, something silver (money box, St Christopher, rattle, photo frame) etc.

A children's Bible. I'm assuming this child is being baptised in the Christian faith?
Edit: a day later and I'm amazed that only one other person - and that is in passing - has suggested a Bible for this child.
Baptising a baby marks its formal welcome into the Christian faith, and shouldn't just be an opportunity to acquire stocks and shares, bonds or sterling silver.
