I would not say that Bush was or is the cause of Islamic fanaticism. Obviously, Al Qaeda was active during the Clinton administration and you can go back at least as far as Sirhan Sirhan killing Bobby Kennedy to see evidence of Arabs blaming the West for a variety of things. What I would say is that, despite what I'm sure are the best of intentions, virtually every action taken by George Bush in the Middle East has added fuel to the fire. I think the just released bipartisan report on Iraq bears that out. The history of that region is one of one large foreign power after another trying to determine the fate of the people who live there, either through conquest, colonialism and now essentially a democracy imposed by force. When people feel powerless is the time when fanatics can gain support. Hitler came to power in Germany, for example, because of the crushing conditions of the treaty of Versailles at the end of WWI. There will always be religious fanatics. What we have done in the Middle East (not just Bush, either) is empower them.

How would you explain Sandy Berger, Clinton's National Security Adviser, handing Condoleeza a comprehensive plan to fight terror and the administration just ignoring it and instead focusing on Iraq? How do you explain the fact that NO ONE in the Bush White House ever took a meeting with Richard Clarke, the man who worked for Reagan and Bush Sr as an ad hoc advisor but was elevated to Terror Czar by Clinton? Read the 9/11 Report: it's all there.

Murderous d***weeds like al Qaeda have always existed because there is such a thing as evil in the world. These are evil men. Just because we make the rhetoric of these bastards look valid because our policies play into it, well, maybe that's a little bit our fault. When everyone with a brain looks at the situation and says we're creating more terrorists than we're killing, that's a problem for Bush.

But as a wise man once said, "If you want to beat a dog, you can always find a stick." If it wasn't because we had troops in Saudi Arabia (we no longer do), it would be because of something else. (which it is). If we stopped supporting Israel (which they purport to want), they would still hate us.

For the same reason idiot conservatives who ask questions like these will always hate idiot liberals even if they agree with your premise (ie, I bet you hate me a little bit right now, don'cha?)

If you want the roots of terror, go back to the Ford admin and our support for Mujaheddin soldiers against Soviet Russia in the invasion of Afghanistan (we armed them, then we betrayed them- always a good combo), our support of the Shah of Iran up to and including the miserable presidency of Jimmy Carter and our inability to deal with the subsequent hostage crisis, our cut and run attitude when the marine barracks were bombed in Beirut and bombing of Libya and trading arms for hostages in Iran under Reagan, our first Gulf War under Bush 41, Clinton's inability to deal with al qaeda because he was being hamstrung by a Republican Congress out to destroy him and every time he took military action in the middle east they called it "wag the dog". . . .and on and on and on. sounds like on giant cluster-muck, if you get me. But that's not even really the beginning. . . .

I am not a Liberal but my own person.
Murderous Islamist are that way because they do not know how to treat their fellow human being and that was way before Bush came into office and way before any of them were ever recognized as individual countries.

America was perfect before Bush got elected. Everything wrong on the planet is his fault. He's a complete idiot, yet somehow controls the entire world - even the weather!

Liberals, do you see how incredibly stupid you sound?

We don't blame Bush for Islamic hatred of the west. We blame him for looking at the middle east and saying- "hey, it's a wasp's nest over there, ...let's go beat it with a stick"

Osama Bin-Laden had a 'manifesto' that described the reasons for his hatred of the west. One of which was that we had a military base in Saudi Arabia.
