You don't mention which IM package you use (AIM, Yahoo, etc.), however, most of these have a setting in their configuration that lets you set whether or not it will automatically start on boot up.

Usually you will find this under a menu item called Preferences or Settings. Find the option that says Automatically Start at Boot up (or something like that) and turn it off.

That should take care of the problem.

Click on start, run, and type in MSCONFIG in the box and hit enter.

Go to the start up tab, and uncheck the the IM listed there. Now restart your pc, and it won't be there next time unless you click on the IM from your programs list in the start menu.

You will get a pop up menu the first time you do this from windows talking about starting in diagnostic mode. Just click on the button that says okay, after making sure the "REMEMBER THIS" box is checked.

Look in the menu for either "Preferences" or "Options" (you did not say what IM program) and there should be a checkbox for whether or not it starts on boot up. Uncheck it.
