Hagrid is - too kind to purposefully gossip - too dense to realize there is anything there worth gossipping over. If Hagrid would've told Harry about the "triangle" although it was more like friendship and misguided longing vs true love supposedly, young Potter would've done the Gryffindor thing and confront Snape and goes as far as to cause Snape trouble, which would probably result in Snape's resentment for Harry to grow, maybe forcing back into true loyalty with Voldy. After the pensive incident I think Harry wouldn't have been so affected by it all, and probably pitied Snape. Dumbledore seems the type to hold stuff back for your own good but that occasionally back fires, but in this case is he knew Hagrid knew he'd ask him not to tell the golden boy.

I think the Dumbledore character is used to keep the reader questioning certain aspects of the the plotline. I do not understand J.K.'s intentions with Ron however.
Remeber it is just a story and the author has been placed in the positon where she is and can be milking it for all its worth...

I believe Dumbledore will be remembered as a compassionate genius whose contributions to the wizarding world far surpass those of even Nicholas Flemmel. Ron of course is a moron.

Dumbledore is older and wiser that gives him the greenlight to be manipulative. If you were the only person feared by a powerful evil being who was after your friend, wouldn't you be manipulative to keep them alive? Ron is supposed to be a moron because he's a foil to Hermoine. He balances out her know-it-all nature.

I don't hate them. Dumbledore is a subtle teacher who points the way but lets the student make the journey. Ron is the best friend who is going to end up romantically with Hermine so he can't be too big of a moron if the smartest witch of her generation wants him.

HEY! I love them, they are the best characters in the stories! Ron is such a numnut but he's so fun and Dumbeldore, well I used to like him, I hate the new actor, he sucks! ah well
and it's sad (wait have you read the books?) well it's sad if you have and all I want is stupid mr. good-at-everything-though-he-never-actually-new-he-was-a-wizard-harry!
