Gift basket for a date out. Put in it a movie gift card, resturant card, bowling, or anything else your parents like to do. or you could do a movie basket, with a blockbuster card(or buy them a couple of movies you think they would enjoy), popcorn, soda and candy.

My parents have both passed several years ago. I have to say that it is not the gift, it is the time you spend with them. I was in the Army and not always home at Christmas so when I was home it was special.
But as far as gifts, I gave them gifts seperate because they had different tastes and could not afford a luxury gift for both of them. My Dad always wanted Hickory farms smoked sausage and my Mom always wanted Godiva chocolate.
I believe that a Christmas gift is something the other person would appreciate and something they would not, generally, buy for themselves. That makes a good gift.

If they are your parents then something they need might be good.
A few years ago I got my parents remote starter for their cars, another year I bought a gift card to the grocery store especially since I always eat over there, last year I made a calendar with family photos and I also did a picture disc photo album, this year my mom wants one of those picuture frames that you plug a memory stick into so that she display the all her pics all the time but, my dad wants satellite radio for his car. Whatever my mom wants is usually what wins. Or you could pay for a family photo session, maid service, lawn care, chimney service, massages, etc..

A good gift would be to make a scrapbook of pictures of them and your family members. It doesn't cost much and usually you can put one together in about a week. I did this for my parents for their anniversary this year. They would treasure it not only because of the memories that are inside the book but because you made it especially for them. My parents love the one that I made so much so that they are still showing it to people who come by the house! I hope this helps!

One year for my parents, we gave them 12 restaurant gift cards. Each card was worth $20. (There's 5 of us, so we each put in $48) We picked places like TGIFridays, Paneras, Road House, Applebee's. Once a month, they went out to dinner or got carryout. My parents LOVED it! They told us if we never know what to get them, do that again. My parents are frugal and try not to go out to eat. They also don't like us spending a lot of money on them, they're always telling us to save our money, so the amount we each paid was perfect.

You must know better what they like to do most. So help them do it, make it easier for them. It can be done with money (little or much, depends on how much you want to give for the present) or by doing some work for them so they will have the time to do what they like.

A gift certificate to their favorite restaurant so they can eat out. I get my dad one for him and his girlfriend so they can eat out quite a few times.
