Iraq is just a replay of 1920 when England aligned with the Russian, Jewish and Arabs (separately and secretly) to oust the Ottman Turks.
This is about deterent and oil (1920 was about Oil and the Suez Canal).
We want access to more oil and cheaper oil. They have it.
We want a base in the area to stage attacks
We want a friendly government in charge
This was good basic strategy from a paper point of view.
It would have given us a lot of squeeze play on Russia, China, Pakistan, all the Arab nations and EVEN ISRAEL.
If WE have another base access point in the Middle East, ISRAEL'S stragegic wealth is diminished. We can do some more arm twisting.
We won't get any of those goals, because like in Vietnam we totally didn't undestand what we were getting into and we didn't Americanize quickly enough.

Anything stated by anyone will be postulation of theory...
My theory.
We go after Usama in Afghanistan. The President is advised that as long as we are in Afghanistan, it would be a good location to launch an attack on Saddam from. As Iran is rattling it's nuclear enrichment program and making noises like it is going to wipe Israel off the map, we figure that having a good foothold in the ME would forestall any action by Iran if it does succeed in it's nuclear efforts. We also, by building a Democratic society in Iraq "infect" the region with freedoms they have never known. The citizens of the neighboring countries see what the people in Iraq have gained and begin feeling restless, making trouble for their leaders which works to the advantage of the west. Iran's hold over it's people is weakened.
This is just my theory and not being a scholar, I can't say for sure but this is how I see it. For my money, it's a worthwhile goal and why we can't back down now. If the radical Muslim faction is to be defeated, we have no other choice.
I believe that this whole mess was not primarily about oil. It would be a secondary benefit if/when we are successful but the primary reason for all of this is the protection of Israel and western interests in the region and the spread of democracy which will of course benefit the western business world.

The Iraq war was absolutely necessary. Saddam's intention
was to dominate the whole world by building nuclear weaponry,
and controlling all his neighbors oil wells. He could very well have
succeeded had it not been for American and British intervention.
Now is really the time for other nations like Iran, Syria, Turkey and
others to go in and mop up. This will also be a deterent for Iran
who will have second thoughts about building a nuclear bomb.
It sounds like a terrible and cruel way to terminate a nation
but it will definitely save a lot of U.S. lives and retain the respect
that other nations have for America.

The Iraq War will go down in history as a great debacle. First we need to go in because of WMD. Then we had to topple Saddam. Then we had to create democracy in the Middle East and Iraq with Saddam out was a good place to start. Also the War would pay for itself with their oil riches. The Iraqis would welcome the US with open arms. The only thing that has happened is Saddam did get toppled but the country is much worse off according to the Iraqis. The big thing thing that will be said about Iraq is how badly the US has mismanaged it. Once again history shows us that you cannot invade a country and change the government.

its like pinky and the brain.... we're trying to conquer the world :)
it's really just about occupation and acquisition. And lets not forget the ultimate goal of some people, which is - to protect Israel (from anyone that might want to defend against Israel's invasion)
