It was a lot more what we now consider rock and pop!? Think little richard, motown, chubby checker, fats domino, the cherelles, richie valens, Elvis etc... All of that was R&B in the 60's and alot of that would not be considered R&B now.

At the risk of sounding like an oldster, the music of the 50s and 60s was wonderful. It wasn't as professional sounding as today's music, but it was real music. Get some CDs (or better yet, records) and check it out for yourself.

It was a great time to be alive and a teenager.

60s R&B is great! Seriously, it's some of the best-written music I've ever heard. I'm not gonna knock today's R&B (mostly 'cause I really like it too), but the old stuff is pretty much the basis of anything with soul today. There are even a few artists who are bringing back that sound (Ne-Yo, Amy Winehouse). You need to check out some Motown recordings. They'll blow your mind.

Great!! Just because some answerers weren't alive doesn't mean you can't experience it for yourself. My parent's listened to "oldies" when I was growing up. And I really got into them a few years ago. It's good music, it was subtle. Not blatantly talking about "getting into your pants" not so vulgar. Because thought R&B can be good music it has a lot of things not suitable for all ages. Though some of these issues were in songs it wasn't as bad... The Temptations (not just otis... personally i think David Ruffin made the group), Marvin Gaye (especially when he sang with Tammi Terrell), Sam Cooke (gospel and secular).... Just tune into your local "oldies" station and you should get a good feel. if not, just listen to some Motown artists to get you started.

It was great because it was for EVERYONE.After the "Black Power "movements it became more and more exclusively black only ,and then Rap came along which ridiculed white music.Really, blacks have very reluctantly allowed whites in it at all. They destroyed Vanilla Ice ,But M&M was just too strong for them.Back in the late 50s and early 60s a lot of the songs were written for black groups by whites, after Motown came along that changed too.Which was fine because the music was still for every one.

In the 60's it was more pure and R&B than it is now where it has funk and a bit of rap sometimes. Oh, heck. It's just a guess but I remember R&B in the 60's as being way more cool than it is now!
