"My girlfriend is a nurse, after a night of heavy drinking, she hooks us up to Saline IVs. Takes care of the hangover in about 20 minutes!" Could someone please speculate if this is safe or healthy?

Here is the page:

Does anyone know if this is (relatively) safe or if that would even work?

yes it will do the trick but all you need is fluid in your body (DRINK WATER)

One of the downside effects of drinking alcohol is dehydration of the tissues in various parts of the body, and many of the unpleasant physical sensations that we call a "hangover" are actually just the symptoms of cellular level dehydration.

So, sure, a saline IV drip is gonna quench the thirst a lot faster than drinking water (or, perish the thought, the hair of the dog that bit you.)

BUT, poking needles into veins always involves certain risk factors like inadequately sterile needles, skin prep or general environment, etc. that are entirely possible to be serious or even life threatening (much like demon rum itself)

Basically, the procedure described is no more 'safe' or 'healthy' than drinking and needle poking... which ain't really all that safe, ya know?

Hangover is a message, and the message is that alcohol is poison. So long as you remember that then go ahead and kill the pain, but remember that there's always a chance that the poison (or pain killer) could just possibly kill YOU first.

It honestly doesn't sound like a mental health issue; it sounds like somehow your girlfriend had a new experience and loved it. Perhaps she saw a bondage film, read a suggestive piece of literature, did some research online, or even met someone with whom she had an 'experience'. I'm not trying to imply anything about your girlfriend, but you have been together for a very long time, and she might have gotten bored with your routine. Yes, perhaps you are going at it hot and heavy, but she might not be as good about communicating her desires to you as you assume she is. As another girl who has had a very hard time explaining what I want to my boyfriend, I would say that perhaps she was trying in the best way she knew to get you into her newest desire. You might be grossed out by the fact she wanted you to do something sexual that also included her ***. So what? There are girls out there who are disgusted at the idea of putting a penis in their mouth. Everyone is different--perhaps you can sit down with her, explain calmly what you did and did not like about the experience, and suggest that you try new things at a slower and more forgiving pace. Do some research on methods of anal interaction, see if there's anything you're willing to try, and be as open-minded as possible. Also, suggest that she take a nice, warm, thorough bath and clean up very, very well next time...it won't smell. Good luck to both of you. It sounds like you love her very much, so don't give up, just open up the lines of communication a little more. I'm sure you two can find a middle ground and take even more pleasure in both your sex life and how well you understand each other.

You can generally prevent hangovers by having a LOT of water and a multivitamin at night before you go to sleep. Hangovers are largely caused by the dehydration effects of alcohol. Yeah, a saline drip would help, but it requires medical training to do right. Just drink some water.

I don't know if it would work. Saline is to rehydrate you, which after a night of drinking if you are dehydrated i'm sure it would make you feel better. On whether or not it is safe, saline doesn't do any harm, but putting in an IV catheter without a docotor around, and while hungover... this i would not recommend.

After a night of drinking I just ate something before bed and rarely had a hangover.

No it is not safe and would not cure a hangover or prevent one. Your best prevention is to drink plenty of water and be sure to eat some protein before you go to bed to help keep your blood sugar level.

I worked in the E.R., and I actually saw an E.R. doctor hooking up one of the 'partying all the time' nurses, do this for her. It seemed to work, and if THEY do it, it must be safe. Very unethical, but safe.

bad protocol yes...but she's basically hydrating by using saline bags...the same could be achieved w/ some water and a salt tab I think...
